France?s top five most affordable ski resorts
We may be in the middle of a recession, but that doesn?t mean that you have to miss out on your annual skiing holiday. Beat the rush without damaging your bank balance by booking into one of France?s best budget ski resorts.
1. Tignes
Located in the Espace Killy, indisputably one of the world?s top skiing areas, Tignes has an array of slopes to suit all tastes and experiences. Plenty of budget accommodation, cheap access and some very reasonable apres ski spots makes this a good choice for recession-minded skiers.
2. Les Arcs
Comprising four modern resorts and a small, picturesque village, Les Arcs is a fantastic budget option for families. The area boasts over 420 kilometres of ski runs, three glaciers and a great range of nursery slopes. It?s close to the airport at Chambery, which is served by a number of low-cost airlines, and there are plenty of affordable places to stay within the resorts as well.
3. La Plagne
La Plagne is located within one of the world?s largest ski areas ? `Paradiski?. It offers 225 kilometres of piste runs, mainly of intermediate standard, but the great range of off-piste areas means it?s a good destination for experienced skiers as well. Despite a whole host of advantages, La Plagne has yet to make it onto the jet set?s radar and therefore is a good choice for those on a budget.
4. Les Corbier
This purpose-built, traffic-free resort might have been designed for cost-cutters. Much of the accommodation comprises of apartments, and two large supermarkets make self-catering straightforward. Best of all, Les Corbier is located within France?s fourth largest ski area, so snow junkies can get the thrills without the hefty price tag.
5. La Clusaz
Unlike some other budget French ski destinations, La Clusaz has managed to retain its village feel. With access to 200 kilometres of slopes and a great range of accommodation, this is a top choice for a fun and relaxing skiing experience.
Finally, remember that the cost of your ski holiday won?t just depend on your destination. Stay within budget by booking in advance from a specialist travel provider such as Alpine Elements, who offer ski holidays throughout the French Alps. Other tips for a cheap break include comparing currency exchange companies, going for self-catering accommodation over hotels and travelling as part of a larger group.
