Les Trois Vallees Ski Guide

Stay in any of the four villages of Meribel, Courchevel, Val Thorens and Les Menuires in the Savoie (73) and you will be in 'Les Trois Vallees' a real winter playground for the rich and famous.

Les Trois Vallees is expansive and possibly the largest ski area in the world, as a result the choice on offer is also huge. Where to start is often the first question on skiers minds, thankfully the choice is made easy in this well planned skiing area.

Courchevel and Meribel accommodate skiers up to an intermediate level. Attracting skiers of all nationalities these two resorts in the heart of Les Trois Valless ski domain are becoming more and more popular each year. Both have excellent ski schools which cater for the English speaking market and pistes to test those newly learnt skills. Advanced skiers are not forgotton as the sheer expanse of this domain provides pistes for all abilities. Courcheval is split into four sections which are classified by their altitude, the further up the valley the higher prices seem to climb. Courcheval 1300 (Le Praz) for instance is an old Farming village, with a relaxed pace which will suit young families. In contrast to Courcheval 1850, which is a popular resort for the rich and famous, some superb hotels and restaurants reflect this. Lifts in 1850 will give you access to some of the best pistes in Les Trois vallees but be prepared for a wait in high season.

Les Menuires and Val Thorens are preferred by advanced skiers, beginners and intermediates are still well catered for however. Gentle green runs will soon get you up to speed and bring you the confidence to start with some of the easier blues.

The nightlife is not as abundant as resorts like Courcehval and Meribel with only a smattering of traditional restaurants and bars but this is one of the charms and the reason these resorts are so popular with French skiers. With less international visitors, queues at the lifts are much shorter which allows for more time spent skiing in this fabulous domain.
